This course explores the emerging intersection of AI-generated data and traditional quantitative data sources in the context of social science research. Participants will engage with methods for generating, interpreting, and validating AI-produced data (e.g., large language models and algorithmically created datasets). The course discusses methodological best practices, validation frameworks, and ethical implications. Use cases will include semi-experimental and observational data settings, highlighting issues like bias and opacity, as well as challenges like interpretability and reproducibility. Emphasis is placed on how to critically assess the usefulness and risks of integrating AI-generated data into empirical research designs and on the usefulness of triangulation approaches and human-in-the-loop component.

Writing a Master’s thesis is a very exciting task, but it can also be challenging. The Master’s Thesis Seminar helps you with this task. It discusses how to pick a thesis topic, how to plan a thesis, and how to write it. Exercises help you in planning your thesis. Moreover, you can get feedback on any text you might already have. Afterwards, you are in a good position to finish writing your thesis.

Technological change has uneven economic consequences for different social groups and communities. If unmanaged, these economic divides may have undesired implications for democracy such as widening gaps in political discontent and distrust. Such economic divides may even create political pushback against further technological change, some of which are conducive to improving environmental sustainability. This course examines the linkages between politics and technological change, and considers its impact on democracy during the Green Transition.

Modern societies are becoming increasingly influenced by the massive amount of data that is generated, collected and utilized every day by public and private organizations around the world. Digital footprints are collected as part of people’s everyday lives and their everyday activities, for example when shopping online, browsing the internet, or using social media. Understanding how data influences (and is influenced by) societies has become an important topic for social scientists. Meanwhile, the vast potential of big data remains largely unutilized in fields related to social sciences. Big data collection has attracted increasing attention over recent years, and an increasing number of surveys, registers, and other traditional types of data are openly available in digital form. The plurality of data-analytics methods and platform-based digital systems enable virtually unlimited possibilities for open innovation with data. How can these possibilities be harnessed into practice - solving of societally relevant problems? This course explores the opportunities and challenges of data and the benefits of a multidisciplinary approach to the use of data in problem-solving. The modules of the course combine theoretical and practical perspectives on the use of data and discuss the challenges that relate to its leveraging in societal and organizational contexts. While the purpose of the course is not to make you a data scientist (coding skills are not expected), it offers valuable sociological views on the use of data that are exceedingly relevant in all types of professional environments characterized by data-driven practices and decision making.

Research in the social sciences is often subjective, usually open to interpretation, and always in need of discussion. Therefore, well-rounded researchers in the social sciences do not only need to be able to conduct research – they also need to be able to participate in the discourse around their research. The skill to connect a text to the wider scientific debate is as important as the skill to spot weak spots in a study design. Moreover, the researchers need to be able to present their comments in a logical and constructive way. This seminar introduces doctoral students to the practices, strategies and vocabulary of discussions on social science research. Moreover, it introduces them to skills that are essential for their future career as a social scientist, such as the basics of pedagogics, grant writing, and possible uses of Artificial Intelligence in social science research.
