BH60L7300 Research methods in circular economy - Blended teaching, Lahti 1.9.2025-17.10.2025
Many different research methods are used within the context of the circular economy. The course “Research methods in circular economy” will give you an introduction to some of these methods. Each lecture will focus on one of these methods and will be introduced by an expert working with the methods within his or her research. Both quantitative and qualitative methods will be covered. You are expected to attend the lectures and read additional reading material given. You will be asked to perform tasks after each lecture based on the lecture content and the reading material, participate to the final seminar (mandatory), and complete an assignment at the end of the course. In the final lecture/seminar you will present you work within small groups to other students and discuss your findings together. You will need to pass your final assignment with a pass in order to pass the course.
Use of AI applicationsYou are not allowed to present AI in any of your assignments as if it was your own. However, you are encouraged to ask help from AI to create ideas or get a general overview of the topic (similar as in the use of an encyclopedia) . We, however, expect you to be aware of the outcomes of AI, as they are generic and not always accurate, and its content will not be sufficient to complete your assignments successfully. We expect you to go deeper into your assignment topics by going through scientific literature, among others.
Working life skills
The aim of the course is to provide you with the knowledge on different research methods and how they can help you tackle questions related to sustainability and the circular economy. Additionally, you will develop your writing skills and learn how to reference in an appropriate manner. These will be important skills to have in your future profession. We additionally hope to develop critical thinking by means of feedback to other students and your own.

Students complete a Massive Open Online Course called Climate.now as well as specified additional assignments. Grading is done monthly with the exception of July.

Terminology related to recycling and recovery; Recycling and recovery rates of different materials; Recovery of agricultural waste and sludges; Recycling of construction and demolition waste; Recycling of metals, end-of-life vehicles, batteries or/and WEEE; Recycling of plastics; Industrial residues recycling to geopolymer composites; Thermal waste-to-energy technologies; Flue gas emissions and their reduction in waste incineration; Treatment of waste incineration residues; Recycling of other materials as seminar presentations prepared by students.
This course is also suitable for postgraduate students (more individual work and additional tasks).

Opintojaksolla käsitellään kestävän kehityksen ja liiketoiminnan välisiä vaikutuksia sekä kestävyysmuutoksen taloudellisia ohjauskeinoja. Kestävyysmuutosta ja sen hallinnointia tarkastellaan erityisesti liiketaloudellisena haasteena sekä tähän liittyvää riskien hallintaa ja taloudellisia ohjauskeinoja.
