Tuotantotalous - Industrial Engineering and Management

The idea of the course is to learn and understand the links between innovation management and sustainability and familiarize students with the emerging concepts of sustainability-oriented innovation. The course aims to enhance the development of students' sustainability competences (e.g. critical and anticipatory thinking, collaboration, communication, strategic action and systems thinking) to be used in future decision-making.

Processes, methods and tools of innovation and technology management: Strategic analysis methods, future studies, idea generation, concept development, decision-making support for innovation process, Quality Function Deployment, design for business model innovations. Varying contemporary themes, e.g. circularity, twin transformation, ethics in technology management.

Students will study key knowledge areas related to: - Responsible/sustainable innovation, design and assessment - Ascription of responsibility, normativity and ethics  - Sustainable system change and transitions - Future studies Key theoretical knowledge is transferred through pre-recorded lectures and recommended readings for each week. Learning is facilitated through weekly collaborative exercises, course main project and a self-reflection essay. Assessment is based on team work (report and presentation), and individual activity. The course is suitable for Master level students from a business, management and engineering background who have an interest in examining innovation and technology for sustainability in a future-oriented context. In the introductory session, on-site presense at Kouvola campus is highly recommended. Otherwise the course is organized as an asynchronous online course.

Innovaatiotoiminnan strategia. Kehitystoiminta verkostossa. Teollisoikeuksien perusteet. Täydentävä tieto: Tuotealustat, työsuhdekeksinnöt, uuden liiketoiminnan kehittäminen, avoimen innovaation periaate, kestävä kehitys innovaatiotoiminnassa. Opintojakso liittyy kestävään kehitykseen.

Product-Service Systems (PSS) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) trends and digital transformation. Different views on a product/service: structures – processes – lifecycles – sustainability - data/information, challenges with lifecycle management, requirements management and systems engineering. IoT and digital platform based data services for sustainability, features and functionalities of PSS/PLM systems. PLM projects and demos of systems utilization. Future of PSS in various industries.

The course is designed to provide basic knowledge on principles and use of Generative Artificial Intelligence in various industries. It offers a perspective on the identification of opportunities for its application and the related challenges. Several examples of applications are given as well as the requirements presented for the successful implementation of AI systems. Course contents: 1. Basic concepts and definitions of Generative AI 2. Principles of prompts engineering 3. Review of Generative AI tools and technologies 4. Business applications of Generative AI in the selected sectors (marketing, manufacturing, healthcare, transport) 5. Strengths, risks and limitations of Generative AI 6. Requirements for implementation of Generative AI systems in organisation 7. Organisational and technical implications of Generative AI adoption 8. Ethical considerations of AI use

Main aim of the course is to help students learn and understand the unintended negative consequences of sustainability initiatives of different stakeholders and familiarize students with the emerging concepts and frameworks related to the dark side of sustainability literature. Students will learn to analyze the actions of different actors that may result in the mentioned unintended consequences as well as how to prevent and mitigate them. The course aims to enhance the development of students' critical thinking, collaboration, communication, reporting, strategic action, case study analysis and systems thinking skills to be used in future decision-making.

Basics of linear algebra, probability theory, differential equations and optimization, programming in MATLAB-Simulink and Python

Introduction to ethics. Working with technology and in companies. Responsibilities of a professional engineer. Ethical problems and critical thinking. Optional contents: Ethics in software engineering, ethics in industrial engineering and management, software engineer professional conduct and responsibilities, brief introduction to GDPR, user rights in software, ethics and AI, corporate social responsibility, ethical leadership, business ethics.

Different views on product and lifecycle management.  Product architectures and modularity.  Product information modelling and change management.  Requirements information management & systems engineering.  Configuration process and configurators.  PLM systems and their functionalities: managing generic products, individual products, items and documents.  PLM project and system implementation.  PLM for sustainability and circularity.

Opintojaksolla opetellaan käyttämään yleisimpien toimisto-ohjelmien perustoimintoja. Tekoälysovellusten käyttö Tekoälytyökaluja voi kokeilla omatoimisesti tehtävien suorittamisessa ja vertaisarvioinnissa, mutta opiskelija on aina itse vastuussa lopputuloksen laadusta.

Application of strategic analysis methods and frames of reference. Strategic decisionmaking. Development of strategic thinking, problem-solving skills, group work and presentation skills through case exercises. The course excercises includes strategic analyses and case solving in teams. The course includes three graded case exercises to be prepared and presented for the audience of students, teachers and visiting experts from company. The course is executed in collaboration with EY-Parthenon. The course includes networking and career visit to Ey-Parthenon office Helsinki. This excursion is connected to the third case presentation session including also networking event with company representatives. 

Core content: 1) Introduction to Intellectual Property, 2) Patents and utilization of patent information, 3) Basics of patent and trademark searching, 4) Patent search strategies, 5) Patent landscaping, and 6) IP management and strategy. Pre-exercises before lectures include reading material, case patent analysis, video material, Innovation case studies, Deep Tech Finder and IP Score tools. Each lecture includes quiz exercises for self-learning.
