The students familiarize themselves with the structure of a Master's thesis, the standards related to the thesis, and plan their own thesis work. The students prepare and present the analysis of the research topic, prepare and present the research plan in the seminar sessions, draw up and present the intermediate version of the thesis (60-70% completed, includes introduction, literature review, research design, and preliminary findings). The students complete a dissertation work on a topic relevant to strategic finance and/or business analytics pre-agreed with the supervisor.

A220A0550 Advanced Decision-making - Luento-opetus 1.6.2024-31.8.2024
Core content: This course covers the main topics of multiple criteria decision making under certainty, uncertainty and risk. The topics discussed during the course therefore include: principles of decision making under certainty, uncertainty, risk and ignorance, multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) and evaluation methods (TOPSIS, AHP), the use evaluations of absolute and relative type, efficiency assessment models (DEA), game theory (non-cooperative games of two players, cooperative games of two players with/without transferable gains, games against nature), validation of decision support systems and models and sensitivity analysis. MATLAB and Excel are used to build the models and solve assignments, to showcase the practical application of the presented methods. Additional content: fuzzy logic in decision-making is also covered, along with topics such as decision-support systems (DSS), expert systems and optimization. Special content: The course also introduces students to the basics of multiple expert decision-making and reaching consensus.

A240A0900 Business Analytics in Action - Blended teaching 6.1.2025-20.4.2025
This course presents the students with a practical business analytics related problem and requires them to solve the problem applying the knowledge and skills obtained during their previous studies. The students are required to solve the problem starting from a problem definition specified in collaboration with the problem stakeholders (decision-makers, managers, etc.) and ending with the presentation of the proposed solution and defending it in front of the stakeholders. The practical solution of the problem requires the students to design the whole analytics project, select appropriate methods to approach and ideally also to solve the problem, obtain relevant data and prepare it for processing, carry out the actual analysis, perform validation, sensitivity analysis and other steps to assess the quality, reliability and robustness of the model(s) used and of the solution(s) and output(s) obtained. The final solution is presented in the form of written reports including the problem description, suggested solution, justification of the use (or dismissal) of specific tools, the performance assessment, validity, reliability and robustness assessment of the proposed model and its outputs. Performance of the model, its assumptions and limitations as well as the limitations of the use of its outputs need to be discussed. The solution is also defended publicly in front of relevant stakeholders and other teams of students.
The course consists of:
- introductory seminar where the parameters of the problems, their initial formulation by the stakeholders and other issues concerning the course are discussed and clarified
- a workshop on problem definition, where initial brainstorming concerning the potential solutions of the presented problems takes place
- a workshop on business analytics model results presentation and validation, including the ethics in business analytics modelling and problem solving and responsibilities of the analyst
- a progress report seminar where the work in progress is presented and discussed with the teachers, present stakeholders and other groups, feedback is provided
- independent (instructor-guided) work on the problem
- creation of the final report
- a public final result presentation, defense and open discussion
The seminars and workshops will be held on-campus in Lappeenranta.
