LES10A390 Academic and Cultural Exchange in China - Blended teaching 3.3.2025-19.10.2025

This course can be completed as part of an exchange period of at least 3 months at Hebei University of Technology in Tianjin, China. The exchange will be offered from approximately mid-May to mid-August. Students will attend cultural activities and participate in everyday life while reflecting on their experiences in a learning diary. Observations of life in China will be recorded related to the course learning objectives. These observations should pertain to all aspects of culture, but should include the student’s chosen academic field and intended career path when possible. Cultural items should be described in a manner that is consistent with how the items are viewed within the context of China, while also noting how other cultures may view the same item differently. A final presentation will document the student’s journey and experiences. Final presentations can be in the form of written summary, pictorial essay, video production, or combination of all three. In addition to the core course of 5 ECTS, students should also take various courses related to cultural themes at Hebei University of Technology and apply for credits through this course to a maximum of 10 additional ECTS. Course themes offered from year to year may vary.

The course introduces students to different concepts of economic reform and development during the past 40 years in China, through a task-based learning and learning-by-doing approach. The reading materials, lectures, in-class and off-class activities are designed for students to obtain a wide range of detailed information on different topics like, but not limited to below: A switch in national policy: from class struggle to economic growth; Toward the second largest world economy: evidence and reasons; From dire poverty to a well-to-do society:Chinese solution; Rule of law: perfecting governance in China; Breakthroughs in science and technology; Belt and Road Initiative: new engine for Chinese economy; Change in social structure: urbanization in China; The task-based learning method consists of summary reading, personal thought development, and a small research project. Students will receive levels of background knowledge from the assigned topics, and apply this to task work.

LES10A281 Traditional Chinese Culture - Contact teaching 6.1.2025-20.4.2025

This course deals with major cultural aspects of China including traditional Chinese thoughts, arts, artifacts and folk customs embodied in various ways in people’s life so as to provide a comprehensive understanding of China. The focus of this course will be traditional Chinese cultural knowledge through studying texts on 10 cultural topics, including pre-class reading, participating in class activities, MOOC, and completing homework projects. Classroom teaching will be centering around questions of each cultural topic. Students explore answers to these questions through discussion and presentation, based on which students will strengthen their understanding of each cultural topic with after class projects, such as posters, videos, skits, or making speeches on given topics.
